Bringing Fanny Packs Back...

I know what you’re thinking. I thought it too. In fact when Amanda's boyfriend, Nate, proudly sported his black leather fanny pack over the New Year's weekend, I was the first to join in on the banter and mock his handy pack. Being the good sport that he is, Nate simply smiled and said "They're gonna be big in '08! Haven't you heard?" We hadn't! And at that moment all we could do was laugh at the notion that fanny packs would soon be reintroduced as the hot ticket item of the year.

Fast forward a few hours later to the drive into the city with Lio and Claudia when the topic of fanny packs was reintroduced… "I actually wouldn't mind having one to take with me when I walk Larry," I said. "It'd be great to have a place to store my keys, phone and ipod and not have to worry about carrying a purse." Truth be told, I've always secretly longed for a fanny pack. In fact when Ricca went to Japan last year, I requested she bring me back the Gucci one. She of course assumed I was joking and instead delivered a huge Gucci shoulder bag which was much more my style (Good choice, Ricca!). "I've always wanted the Gucci fanny pack!" I blurted out. "Wait, do I want one too?" asked Lio with his interest suddenly peaked. Before you knew it, Claudia also jumped on the Fanny bandwagon and minutes later we were all sold on the idea of bringing the fanny pack back!

The following afternoon, the three of us made our way over to the local Saks and headed straight to the Gucci department where we were instantly submerged in a pool of fabulous Gucci handbags. Not wasting any time, we dove right in and quickly spotted two fanny packs quietly resting amongst a plethora of Gucci wallets. As we stared in awe, the sales lady approached and removed both the small and large fanny packs from the glass case. I tried on the small one and Lio tried on the large one. For the next 30 minutes we all traded off trying on both sizes and parading around the store stopping at the mirror to admire how the fanny pack so gracefully hung from our hips. Before long we all agreed that we wanted the large one, however, the $450 price tag inhibited us from purchasing it on the spot.

So here we are now. A week after new years and still in the market for a Gucci fanny pack. If all goes according to plan, that fanny pack shall be ours before the end of the month. In the words of Nate, “The fanny pack is gonna be big in ’08!” Only this time around, they will be less bulgy and more sleek, made of supple leather and disguised as a chic bag on a designer belt. Yep, the fanny pack is being resurrected from fashion taboo to fashion do. And I plan on doing my part to make sure that it happens!
